The Law Office of Douglas B. Harper represents people and businesses, as plaintiffs or as defendants, in business litigation in Northeastern Illinois. Business litigation is a civil lawsuit where the plaintiff is a person or business, and the defendant is another person or business, and the plaintiff suffered serious financial injury because the defendant acted improperly in business dealings or competition with the plaintiff. These cases are sometimes called business torts or commercial litigation.
The cases that we handle usually involve one of the following issues:

- Shareholder derivative actions
- Disputed non-compete agreements
- Business ownership disputes
- Unfair competition
- Consumer fraud
When we accept a business litigation case, it usually involves events that occurred in Cook County, Illinois. Occasionally, we accept cases that occurred in DuPage, Lake, Will, Kane, Kendall, Grundy, and LaSalle County; and sometimes in Boone, DeKalb, Winnebago, Lee, and McHenry County.
The law office also handles business litigation on appeal.

Jury Verdict Defending a Staged-Accident, Insurance Fraud Lawsuit
We were retained to represent a trucking company after one of their seventy ton trucks rear-ended a car on the highway. The passengers sued and claimed injuries. The truck driver insisted he was not at fault, and he insisted the car swerved in front of his truck and then slammed on its brakes for no reason, purposely causing the accident. After investigating, Mr. Harper determined the truck driver was telling the truth. This was a staged accident. The plaintiffs purposely caused the accident, hoping to win an easy settlement, but Mr. Harper tried the case to a jury and won a verdict for the trucking company on all counts.
Six-Figure Settlement in Breach of Contract Lawsuit
We represented an employee who had been hired by a real estate developer to find investors for a multi-million dollar project. The developer had promised the employee a share of profits generated by the project, but he terminated the employee without paying and claimed there were no profits to share. After investigating, Mr. Harper discovered the project generated lucrative profits, but the developer hid them in a series of complicated business transactions. We filed suit for the employee on a number of theories including breach of contract, and we won a six-figure settlement for him.
